In February 2010, the iTunes Store made history by officially surpassing the 10 billion music downloads mark, marking a major milestone for the platform. The 10 billionth song downloaded was “Guess Things Happen That Way” by Johnny Cash, which was purchased by Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Georgia. Sulcer was unaware of Apple’s “Countdown to 10 Billion Songs” promotion when he bought the song for a Johnny Cash mixtape he was making for his son.

As part of the promotion, Sulcer won a $10,000 iTunes Store gift card and received a personal phone call from Steve Jobs, which he initially didn’t believe was authentic. Jobs had to confirm his identity multiple times before Sulcer eventually realized the call was genuine.

Apple had celebrated sales landmarks for its online music store platform before. On December 15, 2003, eight months after the iTunes Music Store’s launch, Apple marked its 25 millionth download with a prize. Similarly, less than a year later, Apple sold its 100 millionth song and marked the occasion by giving the winner a $10,000 iTunes Store gift card and a personal phone call from Jobs.

Currently, Apple doesn’t make a big deal out of its sales landmarks, unlike in the past. The company avoids reporting individual iPhone sales and other sales fronts, including Apple Watch, Apple Music, and Apple TV+ viewership numbers. Apple views this information as competitive and doesn’t want to constantly one-up itself.
