Vehicle Import Plan
The Sri Lankan government has approved a three-stage vehicle import plan aimed at gradually lifting the existing ban on vehicle imports, which was initially imposed to stabilize foreign exchange reserves during economic difficulties. The plan, which follows the framework set by the previous administration, includes:
- Stage 1: Importation of public passenger transport vehicles and special-purpose vehicles began on October 1, 2024.
- Stage 2: The ban on commercial vehicles was lifted on December 1, 2024.
- Stage 3: Personal-use motor vehicles will be permitted starting February 1, 2025
Conditions for importation include restrictions on the age of vehicles, with personal vehicles limited to three years old and commercial vehicles to five years old. Importers must also register vehicles within 90 days to avoid penalties.
Vehicle Import Cost Calculator
To assist potential importers in navigating the complexities of vehicle taxes and duties, an online Vehicle Import Cost Calculator has been developed. This tool allows users to estimate import costs based on several parameters:
- CIF Price: The cost of the vehicle including shipping and insurance.
- Engine Capacity: Applicable particularly for petrol engines over 1000cc.
- Fuel Type: Options include Petrol, Diesel, Hybrid, and Electric Vehicles (EV).
- Manufactured Year: Users input the year of manufacture to assess eligibility under current regulations.
This calculator aims to clarify the tax implications of importing vehicles into Sri Lanka, which can be quite complex due to varying tax rates and recent changes in luxury taxes
